September 2005 - Trauma & Stress

Trauma – a wound:
An injury: an emotional shock that may be the origin of a neurosis: the state or condition caused by a physical or emotional shock.

Question

I experienced a traumatic event as a child and I am still suffering today that when I think back to it I still cry, shake and feel sick. I cannot forget the thought and it is stopping me from doing so many things, I am still afraid - what can I do?

Mark

Answer:

A few years have passed since 9/11; last Christmas there was the Tsunami in the Far East, more recently we were faced with the London bombings and then last week a massive disaster in New Orleans. Quite a mixture of natural and man made disasters which can have an effect on all of us. Then there are personal traumatic events like: - abuse in childhood, illness, sickness, death of a loved one, divorce, bad memories, abandonment, car accidents, beatings, muggings etc., generally as humans we can deal with awful events with time, time being a good healer. Some people get ‘stuck’ in the past with the thought of ‘then’ still affecting the ‘now’ which can stop us from moving forward.

As time passes if the negative thought is still there it will grow and get worse a little like having a broken leg that has not been set correctly, more serious problems can develop later.

Thought Field Therapy (TFT) can deal with all of these negative thoughts, we can still remember the event but the pain of the thought has gone and no longer holds us back and generally with TFT much of the pain can be lifted in one session. TFT is the tool to help you take back control of your emotions.

Find a good therapist that you feel comfortable with, who will work with you so that you can be happy and positive again.

Question

I suffer from anxiety that I worry, worry, worry about nearly everything – I know it is irrational but I feel as though I am in a downward spiral and I cannot stop myself – what can I do?

Jane

Answer:

I understand how you feel and sometimes in talking about this with friends or family, who may not totally understand exactly how you feel and being told to ‘buck up’ or ‘stop worrying’ does not help you. Sometimes these negative thoughts may have be triggered from a past event or sometimes just a small concern which can grow bigger and bigger.

TFT and hypnosis can get you though this quite easily and also get you to a state where you feel comfortable and more at ease about your emotions. A good Therapist will also get you to a stage where you can use self-hypnosis so you can control any anxiety in the future. After all who would want to see a Therapist for the rest of your life?
